HIALEAH (CBS4) ― Foreclosure filings across the country last month were up nearly 50 percent compared with a year earlier, according to RealtyTrac Inc., a California company that monitors such data.

The company reported there were 4,874 foreclosures in Miami-Dade in May, down 17 percent from April and up 11 percent from a year ago. About one in every 196 homes was in some stage of foreclosure. The county ranked No. 9 according to rate of foreclosures.

There were 4,449 foreclosures in Broward, down 17 percent from April and up 50 percent from a year ago. One in every 179 homes was in foreclosure. The county ranked No. 6 according to rate of foreclosures.

During trying economic times when layoffs increase, futures are uncertain, mortgage defaults on the rise, there are ways to safeguard one's home against foreclosures, and keep one's family stabilized with free seminars and workshops one of which took place earlier on Saturday in Hialeah.

There is also the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, which is on a mission to fight high foreclosure rates, specifically in the South Florida area.

ACORN conducts outreach programs to find homeowners at risk of losing their homes due to predatory loans, and to organize these homeowners to fight back to save their homes.

They would like to see lenders institute a one-year moratorium on foreclosures due to predatory loans. They would also like state and federal regulators devote resources to investigate and prosecute predatory lenders. In addition, they want to encourage the state and Congress to pass legislation to protect families against predatory mortgage lending and foreclosure rescue scams.
