FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― It might look like the pest exterminators put tenting on your house, but don't be confused, the "CAT-5 Hurricane Netting" may be the next revolution in hurricane protection technology.

The device is designed to help deflect and slow wind, while at the same time it lets air breathe through a structure before, during and after a storm. It also allows light to pass through and provide light filled areas during time of power outages. The thick netting can be used along or in combination with storm shutter as a storm protection device.

So using airboat engines, which simulate hurricane force winds, CBS4 put it to the test. The netting is supposed to keep any covered contents in place while keeping them from becoming flying debris. Wind measurements were dramatically less in the area between the house and the netting than outdoors.

The netting is virtually indestructible, its manufacturers claiming there is no wind force that could be generated to tear the net material. The net can be cut to size without loss of strength to surrounding fibers to cover entire homes, roofs, mobile homes, cars, boats, RVs, and even landscaping.
