Study: Low Morale At National Hurricane Center

WEST MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) ― Working at the National Hurricane Center may not be all that it's cracked up to be.

According to an independent review, many employees at the National Hurricane Center suffered from low morale, jealousies and other unresolved conflicts after a leadership crisis and staff mutiny last year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration commissioned the study in December and January. CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald obtained a copy Thursday.

The study found that support personnel described hurricane forecasters as "elitist" and "arrogant," that female employees struggled for recognition and some "introverted" scientists were intimidated into silence.

But the study found the problems did not seriously affect forecasts during the six-month hurricane season.

The new director of the hurricane center, Bill Read, says the report makes the problems seem "a little worse than they really are."
