The 5-day forecast for Hurricane Ida as of 11/8/09 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
A Hurricane Watch has been extended along the northern Gulf Coast region as Hurricane Ida picks up strength.
The Hurricane Warning has been issued for the northern Gulf Coast from Pascagoula, Mississippi to Indian Pass, Florida.
A Tropical Storn Warning and Hurricane Watch are in effect for the Northern Gulf Coast from Grand Isle, Louisiana to West of Pascagoula, Mississippi including New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.
At 10 p.m. Eastern time, the center of Ida was about 400 south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi river with a latitude of 23.7 north, longitude 86.7 west. Ida's maximum sustained winds have increased to near 105 mph making it a Category 2 hurricane. Ida continues to move to the northwest near 12 mph. Hurricane force winds extend up to 35 miles from Ida's center. Ida is expected to take a turn to the north-northwest and increase in speed in the next 24 hours. It should be near the northern Gulf Coast by Tuesday. Ida could strengthen a bit more on Sunday. Ida is expected to begin losing tropical characteristics on Tuesday as it nears the Gulf Coast.
By 7 p.m., the Mexican government had lifted all watches and warnings. By 10 p.m., the Cuban government had also lifted all watches and warnings.
Ida is expected to produce 3 to 5 inches of rain over portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba with 10 inches of rain possible in some areas.
