Hurricane Technology Shown Off In Ft. Lauderdale
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
The annual Florida Governor's Hurricane Conference continued on Wednesday in Ft Lauderdale with the opening of the exhibit hall. Each year exhibitors from disaster preparedness and recovery companies display everything from portable water makers to emergency communication equipment. Most of the exhibitors sell their products to local, state and federal government agencies, but some items anyone can purchase.
This year
CBS4's Craig Setzer found a new product called
Water Brick, which is a portable, storable container that actually can be used to build a structure. They resemble big legos that hold water or sand.
Other products include a
portable water maker a community or FEMA could purchase. It could literally be dropped onto a flooded street and make drinkable water.
Another new FEMA related product is something called
Storm House. In the past FEMA has brought in trailers for those who've lost their homes in a storm. There have been many problems with those trailers, from poor air quality inside the trailers to the fact a second hurricane could blow them away. The Storm House trailer is built to have mold resistant interiors and to withstand winds of 150 mph.
Finally, most of us will not lose our home in a hurricane. But we will lose power and possibly water for several days.
Heater Meals makes living in those types of situations easier by selling emergency meals that can last for several years. The meals are precooked and use a salt water package to activate the heater pack and steam cook the meal. And according to CBS4 meteorologist Craig Setzer, the meals are actually quite tasty!
