Visitors Leave Bahamas Ahead Of Dangerous Ike

NASSAU, BAHAMAS (CBS4) ― Saturday in the Bahamas has been postcard picture perfect. CBS4's David Sutta is there, awaiting Hurricane Ike's expected arrival, watching cruise ships return to Nassau after being kept away for days by Tropical Storm Hanna. As ships return to port, so too have people to the beaches.

But further inland, a different story is unfolding. Storm shutters put up for Hanna are staying up in preparation for Hurricane Ike.

At the airport, tourists are lining up to leave the islands. "They told us that if we stayed, we would have to go into the Grand Ballroom in the Atlantis and sit with everyone in the hotel so I was like no, I'm not doing that!" Jennifer Dimaria from Staten Island told Sutta.

Also from Staten Island, Jennifer Hay is a bit perturbed. "Yesterday, we were not able to get a flight out. Yesterday, they told us everything was booked. We would have to be on standby. I said 'I'm going to give up my hotel.' Go sit on standby when they are evacuating the island?"

Saturday, passengers are finding room on flights; most visitors got out of the Bahamas on Friday. The Dipintos arrived just in time for Tropical Storm Hanna's visit. Now they're headed out just a day later; what a honeymoon!

"Might as well just leave now," Vince Diptino said as he prepared to head back to Chicago, "What a waste!"
