Calm Before The Storm Descends On Marathon

MARATHON (CBS4) ― While many in Key West are planning on braving the storm, most residents in Marathon are hitting the road for a trip up north, out of Ike's path. CBS4's Sharrie Williams is in Marathon, where the calm before the storm is descending on the town.

A house on wheels, a travel trailer, is home to Harry Smid and his wife. He's lived in the Keys for 15 years and survived a number of hurricanes. But Harry has a funny feeling about Ike, so he's adhering to the mandatory evacuation.

"It's a lot different living in a travel trailer than a house," Harry described, "So I pay a lot more attention to that. It's a safety thing. This way, I take my house and be safe."

Most people are following the mandatory evacuation orders. But as Ike draws closer, residents choosing to stay behind truly have to evaluate if their homes will keep them safe.

Marathon resident Tre Yager isn't as concerned about Ike. He's staying put for now. While he tracks the projected path of the storm, Yager also is keeping an eye on the loss of business he's suffering at his market and marina. Ike has forced the tourists out and taken some of Yager's profit with it.

"Obviously, that devastates the business. We lose that whole weekend!"
