Revised Hurricane Outlook Calls For 15 Storms

Prediction: 15 Named Storms

8 Hurricanes

4 Major Hurricanes

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― Three days into the Atlantic hurricane season, famed forecaster William Gray has released his revised hurricane outlook.

Gray's team from Colorado State University calls for eight hurricanes in the Atlantic this year, four of them major. The team also called for a very active season, with 15 named storms.

The revised is the same as their April forecast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last month forecast 12 to 16 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes, with two to five of those being major hurricanes.

Dr. Gray said in December that there are signs of a very active season due to La Nina cool-water conditions in the Pacific and higher sea surface temperatures in the eastern Atlantic.

An average season produces about 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes. The last season in 2007 saw 14 tropical storms, of which six strengthened into hurricanes.

A record 28 storms formed in 2005.
