Dr. Gray Says Hurricane Forecast Was Too High
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Colorado State University hurricane researchers Dr. William Gray and Phil Klotzbach announced their prediction for 11 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season was too high, even after the forecast was brought down in an August update.
The CSU forecasters called for 11 named storms, including 4 hurricanes, two of which would have become major storms. When the team updated their forecast on August 4 it called for 10 named storms, including four hurricanes with two of those storms being major.
The team said the final numbers are nine named storms, three hurricanes including two major storms. From 1950 2000, the average number of Atlantic storms is 9.6 with 5.9 hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
