Florida May Give Tax-Break On Hurricane Supplies

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― Hurricane season is about six weeks away which means South Florida residents should be thinking about stocking up on hurricane supplies. But before you go shopping, there's good news from the state which may support another tax-free holiday for hurricane supplies.

The House Policy and Budget Committee has anonymously approved a measure that would storm supplies exempt from sales taxes for one week at the start of hurricane season. The measure now goes to the entire floor.

The tax break would be from June 1 through June 7 if it gets final approval.

Among the items that would be tax free are flashlights, portable radios, weather radios, tarps, gas cans and batteries.

If it passes it would cost the state about $12.3 million in lost taxes. Local governments would lose out on about $2.8 million.
