MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Hurricane season is still a few days away, but the first tropical depression of the Atlantic season has formed off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
The storm was located near latitude 38.1 North, Longitude 67.8 West. That puts the center of the storm around 255 miles south-southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts and about 500 miles south-southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph, with some higher gusts. Minimum central pressure is estimated to be around 1006mb. The storm is moving east-northeast at around 16 miles per hour.
Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say the depression could become a tropical storm Thursday night or early Friday before it moves over cold waters and weakens.
When it hits tropical storm strength, the system will be named Ana. The system is not expected to impact any land areas.
