It's been quiet in the tropics, thanks in part to the Pacific Ocean weather event known as "El Niño", but the National Hurricane Center is watching something that it believes has a fair chance of developing into the season's first named storm.
Forecasters at the Hurricane Center say a strong tropical wave has formed in the area of the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa. Models indicate the wave could move north in to the Atlantic before reaching the Lesser Antilles islands, but at this point the wave is far from land and poses no immediate threat.
However, the Hurricane Center gives the wave a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression or a tropical storm in the next few days. If that happens, it would be Tropical Storm Ana. There is still no way of knowing what area might be affected should a depression or storm form.
The wave is moving west at between 10 and 15 mph.
