It's been quiet in the tropics, thanks in part to the Pacific Ocean weather event known as "El Niño", but the National Hurricane Center is watching something that it believes has a fair chance of developing into the season's first named storm.
Forecasters at the Hurricane Center are watching a tropical wave to the southwest of the southern Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa.
Showers and thunderstorms associated with the wave have diminished; however, conditions still appear favorable for further development, according to the Hurricane Center. It could become a tropical depression during the next day or two as it moves toward the west at 10 to 15 mph.
If it were to strengthen into a storm, it would be Tropical Storm Ana. There is still no way of knowing what area might be affected should a depression or storm form.
