Gulliver Mourns Loss Of Alumnus Sean Taylor

PINECREST (CBS4) ― Gulliver Preparatory High School in Pinecrest on Wednesday held a memorial service for Sean Taylor, who attended and graduated in 2001.

It was a morning service held in the school's courtyard. Students also stood on the balconies looking down on the those who spoke.

A Sean Taylor jersey was framed on a pedestal along with a photograph showing him in his Washington Redskins uniform.

"He leaves behind a special legacy both as an athlete and an incredible person," said TJ Villamil, student council president.

"May you never forget this player, and this person who gave so much to everyone around him," said Gulliver Schools Director Marian Krutulis spoke.

There was a moment of silence.

Gulliver's high school coach Don McCloskey said, "He was a first-class person and he was a friend to everybody he met. He was respected by his coaches, classmates and teachers. I contend his greatest achievement was his positive impact and favorable impact on all who had the opportunity to know him."

Gregory Bellamy, a classmate with Taylor, and now the defensive line coach for the Gulliver Raiders, praised Taylor as a "humble leader and a good friend".

"He always used to tell me, keep working hard in the weight room, and you can get there as well. I just tried to live up to his standards."

In his senior year, Taylor scored 44 touchdowns, and the school won the Florida Class 2A championship.

Taylor then played for the University of Miami, and eventually drafted in 2004 by the Washington Redskins in a seven-year, $18-million contract as the highest-paid defensive back.
