WFOR Explains: Newsroom On Your iPhone
Gio Benitez
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
WFOR made history in June 2009 by producing an entire news story using only the iPhone 3GS. We did it on the day of the phone's release.
You can
watch the original story by clicking here.
After the story aired, so many people asked us the same question: "how did you do it?" That's why WFOR produced this next story to guide you through the process of how we made television history.
You can
watch our instructional "how-to" video by clicking here, and follow along with this guide. If you have any questions, you can reach me on Twitter at

Quick disclaimer: these instructions are mostly for Apple computer users.
Note from Dave Game, Executive Producer of Digital Media:
Video on cell phones is not new; in fact, the iPhone lacked the ability to record video until June, while most phones have been able to do it for years. What makes the iPhone different is the ease of use, Apple's integrated software, and the high video and audio quality lacking on most cell phones. You could do this with other phones, but the newest iPhone just makes it easier. If you're not an Apple fan, you can take our suggestions and translate them to your own phone and video software, but "your mileage may vary".
Step 1: Recording video
- Open the camera application on the iPhone 3GS and switch the camera to its video setting (using the slider at the bottom of the screen).
- Before you start recording video, it's important to turn the phone on its side (you'll see the slider images also turn). Shooting horizontally makes the video true broadcast quality.
- When interviewing, make sure that you are close to the person.
- Make sure you are not covering the microphone with your hand (the microphone is at the bottom of the phone the same place where you plug it in to charge and sync).
- Open the camera application on the iPhone 3GS and switch the camera to its video setting (using the slider at the bottom of the screen).
Step 2: Recording your voice
- Open the "Voice Memos" application on the iPhone.
- Hold the phone some 6 inches away from your mouth.\
- Hit the record button.
- After you finish recording, hit the stop button.
- Hit the button on the other side of the screen, it shows a list-like image.
- Select the file, play it, then e-mail it to yourself by hitting "Share."
Step 3: Transferring video
- Connect the iPhone 3GS to your computer using your USB cable.
- The iPhoto application on your Apple computer should launch automatically. All of your images and videos will display together.
- Transfer the video files.
- Drag and drop those downloaded video files into a separate folder on your desktop or elsewhere.
Step 4: Editing
- Open up Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro software on your Apple computer.
- Drag the video files into your project (from the separate folder).
- Render your video files in Final Cut by dragging them into the timeline.
- Now you're ready to edit an iPhone piece!
