Alcoholic Energy Drinks Pulled After I-Team Probe

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Since February, CBS4's Laurie Stein has been telling you about the growing concern over alcoholic energy drinks, and now something's being done to keep your children safer.

The largest beer distributor in the country, Anheuser-Busch, has agreed to stop selling alcoholic energy drinks. The lead attorney general on the case told Stein that he is awfully pleased. This comes after a six month I-Team investigation.

Effective immediately, Anheuser-Busch will stop making its popular alcoholic energy drinks "Tilt" and "Bud Extra". Its web site tiltthenight.com will be shut down, and in an unprecedented agreement with 11 attorneys general, it will not sell any more alcohol drinks with caffeine. It will also pay $200 thousand in administrative costs to the government.

"They have agreed to get out of this business forever," said Maine Attorney General Steve Rowe. "So it's a permanent withdrawal from the alcohol-energy drink business. This settlement is a national settlement, in that it will apply to all 50 states."

As the CBS4 I-Team exclusively reported, alcoholic energy drinks were often able to be purchased by minors, and the medical community had strong concerns about mixing a stimulant with a depressant. In fact, along with help from the FHP Laurie Stein showed what the combination did to her. The investigation sparked strong reaction from the community as well as a federal investigation.

Officials hope that other companies will follow Anheuser-Busch's lead.

One of those companies is Miller Brewing. It says it will cooperate fully with the federal investigation, but right now it has no plans to take "Sparks" off the market. On Monday, we invite all of you to get involved in this issue. CBS4.COM will host a live web chat. We're going to have medical, legal, and political representatives in person and online, and everyone in the community can join in and ask questions or give us your comments. That'll happen at 7pm Monday.
