I-Team: Data Shows Violence Up In Broward Schools

Dillard High School Ranked 4th Most Violent In Broward County

Nov. 12th A 15-year-old Student Was Allegedly Killed By Another

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Wednesday's shooting at Dillard High School was not the first violent incident to take place at the high school in recent years. Numbers from the Florida Department of Education show violence at all Broward County High Schools is on the rise.

The CBS4 I-Team looked at the number of incidents of violence at Dillard High School last November. Numbers showed that Dillard was the fourth most violent high school in all of Broward County for the 2005-2006 school year. Boyd Anderson, South Broward, and Cypress Bay High Schools were the only ones more violent in Broward County.

The data from the 2006-2007 school year showed no significant gains in the fight against crimes at Dillard High School. In the 06-07 school year, there were a total of 73 fights, 5 weapons were seized on campus, and the total number of violent act stood at 154.

All of this came despite a reduction in the overall numbers of students in Broward County. Since 2004 the number of violent acts against other people has gone up from just over 1000 in the 2004-2005 school year, to more than 12 hundred in 2006-2007.

The numbers look even worse when you compare the numbers of incidents for every 1000 students jumped from 3 point 54 in 2004-2005 to 4 point 45 for 2006-2007. These numbers include including battery, which saw a jump of 251 incident, and fighting which jumped by 688.

Still, Broward County School Superintendent James Notter remains optimistic Wednesday's shooting was an isolated incident. "I believe they should feel good about that fact. Again, when you look at the history at this particular school, we do not have you know, a history of violence here to this magnitude at all," Notter said.

For comparisons sake, in Miami-Dade County the latest data shows 12 hundred 26 violent acts, roughly the same rate as Broward County. But, Miami-Dade's numbers have dropped significantly since 2004-2005.
