Simple Steps To Avoid Lip Injection Nightmares

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Lots of people wish they had fuller, softer lips. Some of them eventually get that wish, fulfilled with lip injections. But others end up regretting the day they came face-to-face with a needle.

Dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban has seen the results of lip injections gone horribly wrong. Women have come to her after bad injections and the damage can last as long as a year.

Solace Pineo is getting her lips injected. It's her first time and she knows exactly what she doesn't want to look like. "I don't want to be exaggerated or do something really different. I just want to maintain what I'm used to having."

Luckily for Pineo, there are several ways to avoid lip injection nightmares.

First off: if a permanent filler is used, it's a permanent problem.

"One of the scariest things about lip augmentation as a physician is seeing a patient who has been overfilled to the point that their lips look like they're about to burst. People start to drool at the corners of their mouth and also it becomes uncomfortable and people start to see bumps, Dr. Shamban explained.

Fillers are commonly used in the lips, but the FDA has not approved them for that. Now, studies are underway to show the safety in these products and eventually set some guidelines for all doctors.

"Plastic surgeons, I think, have an advantage. We reconstruct lips all the time," said Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeon Dr. Roberto Palma. He believes that for best results, patients need to make sure the work is done by a licensed physician with a good list of patient referrals.

Dr. Palma says hyaluronic acid is a safe filler for the lips, but he believes the only safe permanent filler is the patient's own fat.

Palma admits the key to proper lip rejuvenation is to maintain the natural look of the lips. "Most of the fullness of the lip is in the center part of the lip. So if you start filling the whole lip including the sides they look like ducks and they look terrible."

As for Pineo, she got the results she wanted. She now looks youthful, healthy and sexy according to her doctor.
