Plane Crashes & Explodes At North Perry Airport

The Name Of The Pilot Has Not Been Released To The Public

PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) ― An experimental aircraft crashed and burst into flames at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines Monday evening, killing the pilot.

The small aircraft crashed off a runway at the airport, near some adjacent tennis courts. When CHOPPER 4 flew over the scene the entire aircraft was engulfed in flames. Officials believe the plane is a Lancair model. The pilot was the only one onboard and he died on scene.

This is not the first time that the owner of the plane experienced problems.

In a July 2001 crash landing, the pilot reported the following, regarding an abrupt loss of engine power: "Nearing the airport, it became clear that we were going to come up short--there was a headwind. These are hardest decisions of your life in that last minute."
FAA officials say the plane was taking off, and heading east, when the accident happened.
