Condo Design: Planning Your Space

Furnish And Decorate Your Condo In A Way That Maximizes Spaciousness

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―

When Annette Davila inherited her mother's Fort Lauderdale condo, she knew she had her work cut out for her.  To say the condo was outdated would have been an understatement.  It's as if it were suspended in a time capsule from the 1960s, the era when it was built.

Davila, a mother of two from New Jersey, turned to South Florida designer Brad Toth to work his magic.  Toth knew he needed to do a major makeover.  "It was really a lot of heavy wallpaper and velvets, really closed in," he says.

So the first step was to take a wall out of the front entrance to create more space.  Then, he added an antique console table for a clean but elegant look.  "When you come in, your first visual is an important one," he says.  "It sets the tone."

What was once a boring wall is now transformed into a piece of art:  it's wheat-grass framed in Plexiglass.

The living room went from crowded and dark to open and light by bringing in soft colors from the view outside.

Down the hall, a rarely used den became a comfortable media room and third bedroom.  The guest bedroom got a makeover that made it spacious, clean, and hip with edgy, fun side lamps made from wall panels.

The master bedroom was transformed from fussy to calming. Toth used a color scheme of taupes, blues, and silver. He also made good use of heirlooms, including her mother's vintage lamps, updating them with new shades and setting them on oversized end tables.

An antique armoire plays center stage in the room, setting a theme of mixing old with new in a beautiful space.

For Annette Davila, this is now a home away from home, a peaceful and pleasant retreat.
