CBS4, Miami Magazine Team Up

MIAMI (CBS4) ― CBS4 and Miami Magazine have partnered to help viewers keep up with the latest trends, fashion, people who make a difference in our community and events about town. One of the first areas to be highlighted by this partnership is an undiscovered area of southwest Miami-Dade that's quickly become a fashion frontier.

A strip mall named Bird Road lies just outside of Coral Gables. It doesn't have the look of Merrick Park or Lincoln Road, but Miami Magazine says the area is an 'up and coming' fashion district that makes sense for boutiques.

"You really almost need to be a chain (store) to be able to afford Lincoln Road, and for mom and pop shops and boutique owners, this is a great alternative," said Miami Magazine senior editor Melissa Cantor.

One shop that is capitalizing on this area is called Savvy Girl. The boutique carries the latest lines from celebs like Jennifer Lopez and local designers like Rosa Cha.

"I have a lot of UM students and I have a lot of people from everywhere, south Miami, Cocoplum. This is their little shopping center, they go do groceries and then shop here after," said Savvy Girl owner Kristine Ferradas.

A little west of Savvy Girl is Septimo Boutique. The store specializes in 24 carat gold plated jewelry designed by owner Sylvia Fassardi. She too has been pleased with the location of her shop.

"There's a lot of traffic here, people from the west, go to east area, and they have to pass, it's very convenient," Fassardi said.

A few doors down is Pink Blush, a second fashion boutique which was opened by Mayra Saldana. She carries what she terms as the "wallet friendly" collection of costume jewelry accessories and clothes.

"People were telling me I'm crazy because nobody shops at Bird Road. It's more like an antique area and I said, 'I know people will come', fashion customers want more access to parking," said Saldana.

Miami Magazine says the Bird Road Shopping District is a 'golden shopping opportunity' that will have many people taking a second look as they pass by.

"I think that's what we're trying to show people," said Cantor, "If you don't know about it, you should come check it out and not judge a book by its cover."
