Lightning Halts Police Calls As Storms Hit Broward

PLANTATION (CBS4) ― A series of fast moving thunderstorms lashed parts of Broward County Friday evening, bringing heavy lightning which damaged a police radio tower and put Plantation 911 operators out of business for more than an hour. Reports were also made of a funnel cloud, but no tornado was officially spotted.

The storms were part of a line of severe weather which hit much of South Florida, dumping enough rain in some areas that the National Weather Service declared an Urban Flood Advisory due to street flooding and some drenching of low-lying areas.

There were reports of scattered power outages, but no significant loss of power.

A spokesperson for the Plantation Police department said lightning struck a police communications tower, interrupting the ability of police to talk with dispatchers.

911 calls were temporarily sent to the Sunrise Police department, and police said no emergency calls were missed.

A chance of thunderstorms continues through the weekend.
