While all eyes are on Beijing on this day, 8-8-08, for the start of the 2008 Olympics, the eyes of a South Florida couple are on their newborn daughter who arrived on 8/08/08 at 8:08 a.m.
Catalina Rose was born at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale Friday morning. She arrived via planned caesarian section. Mother and baby are doing fine.
Some people suggested the name Olympia Beijing but her parents decided to go with Catalina Rose.
The date and time of her arrival is of special interest because some people believe the date is good luck. 8/08/08 is a once-in-a-100-year occurrence.
The source of the day's numerical hope is China, where the word 8 sounds a lot like the word for prosperity.
8/08/08 is also an extremely popular date for weddings as brides and grooms hope the date will bring them luck and prosperity. Wedding Web site theknot.com reported 22,000 weddings across the nation registered for today, vs. 5,000 on other Fridays this month.
Here in South Florida, the operators of both the Signature Grand in Broward and Signature Gardens in Miami-Dade, two popular banquet halls popular for weddings, are booked to capacity today as they are dealing with 8 weddings taking place this afternoon and evening.
