911 Calls Reveal Chaos After Bikers Hit

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The 9-1-1 calls tell the story of frantic witnesses who saw a cab driver barrel into 11 bicyclists Sunday morning on the MacArthur Causeway. "There was a group of them. He just ran into all of them. People were ten feet in the air," said one caller to Miami Beach's Dispatch.

One of the calls that morning into 911 was from a cyclist herself. "We have riders down that got hit by a car. They are shaking. They are bleeding," pleaded the cyclist with the operator. Rescue arrived and took at least 6 people to Jackson.

Police say cab driver Herbert Morias crashed into a group of 11 bicyclists who were travelling east on the MacArthur Causeway. Morias admitted to police he fell asleep behind the wheel.

The crash sent Julio Fuertez to the hospital with minor injuries. The accident tore up his bicycle gear, ripping his shirt to shreds. Fuertez now has scrapes to his arms and legs. Fuertez told CBS4 News, "If cab drivers keep falling asleep on the job, they will kill someone."

But according to a lawyer representing Checker Cab Company they believe Morias may have just started working at 3 a.m., meaning he had been working five hours. We checked with Miami-Dade County; they have no limits on how long cab drivers can work.

We spoke with Morias' wife after the accident Sunday. "I feel sorry for the family for the guys… we feel very bad," she said. Riders and their families are just glad the accident wasn't worse.

At last check, the remaining patient was in critical but stable condition at Jackson Memorial. If everyone makes it okay, the driver will most likely be charged with careless driving. We checked his driving record; in July he received a ticket for running a stop sign. He has also received tickets for not obeying HOV lane laws and for speeding.
