The plastic poles that separate the newly constructed express lanes from the mainline of I-95 are finished going up. As of Thursday, the bright orange poles extend along the southbound I-95 corridor from Miami Gardens Drive down to SR-112/The Airport Expressway.
The northbound express lanes were completed a year ago; they have been deemed a success in helping to alleviate congestion, particularly during the evening rush. FDOT officials are hoping to see the same success story take shape in the southbound express lanes of I-95.
The traffic cones went up without incident. No accidents were caused from drivers trying to weave through the plastic poles.
FDOT is urging drivers to follow these simple safety tips when using the new southbound express lanes:
- Plan ahead. It is unsafe and unlawful to drive through the plastic poles to change lanes
- Use local lanes If your trip calls for exiting I-95 north of S.R. 836
- If you unintentionally enter the express lanes, stay calm. Do not stop or attempt to change lanes. Proceed south to where you can exit the express lanes safely and turn around.
Tolls won't begin to charge until January so that driver have time to get accustomed to the lanes.
