The family of slain student, Amanda Collette, spoke on Friday in Fort Lauderdale hoping her death will not have been in vain. They hope the death of the Dillard student leads to better school security and awareness about school violence.
The relatives shared their terrible sense of loss. Her aunt, Teshawnia Thompson, spoke to the news media at a family home explaining, "She was only 15, and she touched so many lives
from the amount of calls we received."
"I cannot tell you the amount of sorrow we're feeling," she added. Many of Amanda's family members are graduates of Dillard High. They believe more steps should be taken to curb potential violence. "The thing that bothers me is that Amanda is not here. She's only 15 years old, and she's gone, and this didn't have to happen."
"School violence is a very serious issue and it's something that we all need to be aware of and to address. There's some preventative measures that could have been taken and maybe this would not have happened," Thompson insisted, family by her side.
Standing on the lawn where Amanda would congregate with family every Sunday, Thompson continued, "We never can imagine that we will never see Amanda again."
Amanda's parents did not want to comment.
Amanda will also be remembered by fellow dancers at the Pro-Am Dance Studio in Pompano Beach, where she performed for nearly five years. They will hold a fundraiser for the family.
On Sunday, there will be memorial service open to the public in the auditorium of the performing arts building of Dillard High School at 4pm.
The funeral mass on Monday, Nov. 17th will be open to the public. The mass is scheduled to start at 11am at St. Clement Catholic Church, located at 2975 N. Andrews Ave. in Wilton Manors.
Following the mass, there will be a burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 3201 NW 19th St. in Fort Lauderdale.
