Dillard Teacher Cleared, Will Return To Class
I-Team data shows school violence rising
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
A Dillard High School teacher, who was temporarily reassigned during an investigation into whether he knew a student brought a gun to campus, has been cleared to return to class.
On November 12th, Fort Lauderdale police say 15-year old Teah Wimberly brought a gun to school and used it to shoot and kill 15-year old classmate Amanda Collette.
After the murder, another student came forward and claimed he told a teacher that Wimberly had a gun on campus prior to the shooting but the teacher didn't do anything to stop it.
The teacher was placed on administrative leave with pay as the Broward County Public School District launched an investigation to determine whether the teacher had knowledge of the gun prior to the shooting and it has been determined that he did not.
Therefore, the teacher has been cleared of any wrongdoing and will return to his regular teaching duties at the school later this week.
According to the girls' friends, Wimberly was upset recently after having approached Collette about a romantic relationship and was rejected.
In a police report obtained by CBS4 news partners The Miami Herald, Wimberly reportedly told investigators after the shooting: "I wanted her to feel pain like me.''
Wimberly has been charged with first-degree murder. The Broward State Attorney's Office has indicated that she will most likely be charged as an adult. To charge her with first degree murder as an adult, prosecutors must take their evidence to a grand jury and have them hand up an indictment.
