Biscayne Park Planted With Shades Of Relief

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

Sixty-six live oak trees were planted Friday, at Biscayne Park, as part of the City of Miami's Green campaign of 37% more shade restoration for the community by 2017. The project is a cooperation of various public and private agencies, including that of CBS4.

The event was sponsored by AmeriCorps Week 2008, the City of Miami VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) Partnership, in conjunction with the Office of Commissioner Marc Sarnoff.

AmeriCorps members are Americans of all ages and backgrounds who serve full-time for one year at community-based and faith-based organizations. AmeriCorps help combat poverty and improve the quality of life for communities nationwide by building capacity for social service agencies and providing direct services, like tutoring students and helping prepare for and recover from hurricanes.

Based on their living allowance, AmeriCorps members live at the poverty level of those they serve - they are a "domestic peace corps." AmeriCorps is a network of three programs - AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps Civilian Community Corps - that each year engages nearly 75,000 Americans in service to meet critical needs in education, the environment, and public safety.
