Americorp Week 2008 Wraps On Virginia Key Beach

Volunteers Plan To Plant A Thousand Trees

CBS4 Is A Proud Partner of The Event

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Shovels and hoses in hand, hundreds of volunteers plan to plant more than a thousand trees and shrubs at Virginia Key Beach Park as Americorps brings their 'AmeriCorps Week 2008' to a close.

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz said not only will the planting of the sea grapes and sable palms be a green service project, it will also be ecologically beneficial.

"As part of our eco-zone program, the one thousand trees planted by the volunteers are going to help save five hundred tons of gas emissions because these trees and plants are our first line of defense and will help the environment," said Miami Mayor Manny Diaz.

Friday, nearly 70 live oak trees were planted at Biscayne Park as part of the City of Miami's Green campaign of 37% more shade restoration for the community by 2017.

This weekend's projects were sponsored by AmeriCorps Week 2008, in conjunction with the City of Miami VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) Partnership and a number of public and private agencies, including CBS4. AmeriCorps is a network of three programs - AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps Civilian Community Corps - that each year engages nearly 75,000 Americans in service to meet critical needs in education, the environment, and public safety.

AmeriCorps members are Americans of all ages and backgrounds who serve full-time for one year at community-based and faith-based organizations. AmeriCorps help combat poverty and improve the quality of life for communities nationwide by building capacity for social service agencies and providing direct services, like tutoring students and helping prepare for and recover from hurricanes.
