CORAL GABLES (CBS4) ― Family members of 17-year-old Juan Carlos Rivera, the 10th grade boy who was fatally stabbed at Coral Gables High, are feeling hopeful that his mother, Anais, may be allowed to come from Cuba for his funeral. They met with U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's staff on Wednesday.

Ros-Lehtinen and others in Washington are helping to arrange a humanitarian visa for Rivera's mother who lives in Havana, Cuba. Late this afternoon, the Cuban government agreed to meet with the mother Thursday morning at 7am in Havana.

"He was sweet and respectful," said the teen's grandmother Bruna Peiando, "He was someone everyone loved."

Rivera's family wants the teen's mother to be allowed to travel to South Florida for her son's funeral and the trial of the teen accused of killing him. But it won't be easy getting her here because she's a doctor in Cuba.

"The Cuban government has to cooperate and authorize her exit because she's a Cuban doctor," according to Congressional Aide Ariel Fernandez.

CBS4 News contacted Rivera's mother in Cuba, but she was too distraught to comment. A friend said she's so upset, that she had to be medicated.

Rivera's father lives in Spain, where Rivera lived until recently.

His cousin Laura Peinado said Rivera moved to Miami about four months ago to live with his grandmother and uncle.

The family has set up a fund to help pay for funeral expenses and for travel expenses to get Juan Carlos' mother here from Cuba and his father here from Spain. If you'd like to help out, you can contact CBS4's Neighbors 4 Neighbors at 305-597-4404.

Rivera was stabbed to death during a fight Tuesday in a school courtyard, authorities said.

His alleged attacker, 17-year-old Andy Jesus Rodriguez, was taken into custody immediately after the stabbing and has been charged with second-degree murder.

Miami-Dade School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the fight happened sometime after 9 a.m. as students moved from first- to second-period classes. He could not say what the two students were arguing about but witnesses said it may have been over a girl.

According to the police report, both teens were walking down a hallway Tuesday when they intentionally bumped into each other and began to fight. At some point, Rodriguez reportedly threw Rivera to floor and stabbed him several times.
