USF Linebacker Released, No Spinal Injury

MIAMI (AP) ― A University of South Florida linebacker injured in a game against Florida International University in southwest Miami Dade on Saturday was scheduled to be released from the hospital on Sunday.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami say USF senior Bruce Mompremier, who is from Miami, did not suffer any severe spinal injuries when he collided with a teammate late in the game.

Mompremier is expected to return to Tampa Sunday evening and meet with USF doctors next week to determine the specific injuries and a timetable for recovery.

The collision with teammate Carlton Williams happened with 6:43 left to go in the third quarter. Williams remained down for a few minutes before limping off the field with an apparently injured left leg. Mompremier remained motionless on the ground as more than a dozen medical personnel rushed to his side.

USF teammates and even some FIU coaches knelt silently while doctors tended to Mompremier. As he was placed on a backboard and lifted onto a gurney, players from both teams met at midfield for a prayer.

Fearing Mompremier may have suffered a severe spinal cord injury he was taken from the field after about 20 minutes, rushed by ambulance to a nearby soccer field. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue then transported Mompremier by helicopter to Ryder Trauma Center.
