Suspended Broward County Sheriff's deputy Jonathan Bleiweiss pleaded not guilty in a Broward County courtroom Friday morning to charges that he used his law enforcement position to intimidate multiple men into performing sex acts. He would often stop the men during routine traffic stops. Bleiweiss faces 14 counts on one victim and seven counts on a second victim, including sexual battery by a person in authority and stalking.
Eight men in total contacted the Broward Sheriff's Office. Bleiweiss was denied bond by Broward Judge John Hurley after his initial arrest.
After an August hearing, Bleiweiss's attorney, Eric Schwartzreich, said the charges are unfounded.
"These are only allegations. I don't believe there is, for a lack of a better term, I don't believe there's any foundation or meat on the bone to these allegations. He didn't do this. They are allegations and we're confident he'll be acquitted in court," Schwartzreich said.
Schwartzreich also called into question the motives of the illegal immigrants coming forward and called their actions suspicious.
Bleiweiss is a seven-year veteran of the agency and patrolled the Oakland Park area. Detectives say Bleiweiss targeted illegal immigrant men in their late teens and 20's, often pulling them over for traffic stops or stopping them on the street.
Detectives said Bleiweiss would pat them down, often groping them and even leading to more involved sex acts.
According to a BSO news release, in one incident that occurred in April, a victim told detective Bleiweiss asked him for identification. The man told BSO Bleiweiss placed him against his patrol car and while patting him down, groped him inside his underwear.
The victim told investigators Bleiweiss also demanded the man's cell phone number and continuously called and texted him. BSO said the incidents came to light when an employer of one of the victims brought information to the authorities.
