Ex-Deputy Accused Of Sex Acts Awaits Bond Decision
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
The former BSO deputy accused of assaulting illegal immigrants could find out next week whether he'll be released on bond while awaiting trial.
Jonathan Bleiweiss, in a bright red jail uniform, and his attorney were in court Thursday hoping the judge would grant bond, meaning he could get out of jail. He's charged with sexually assaulting undocumented immigrants on multiple occasions while he was on patrol.
However, the decision wasn't made on Thursday because attorneys gave the judge a pile of paperwork to read concerning the case.
But there was other drama going on outside of the courtroom. An attorney for two of the alleged victims claims Bleiweiss' attorney is using scare tactics against them.
"I just think it goes to the intimidation factor," said attorney Roger Cabrera.
Cabrera claims the attorney for Bleiweiss tried to scare them by the way investigators served a subpoena.
"They served a subpoena, asked them questions, took their pictures, threatened them and asked about their immigration status. You don't need to do that to serve a subpoena for a deposition," said Cabrera.
Attorney Thomas Sclafani, Bleiweiss' attorney is not concerned about it being called a case of intimidation. Sclafani says they have the right to investigate and they were well within the law.
"In this kind of a case, with these kinds of witnesses anything at all, any interaction at all is going to be deemed to be intimidation, because they don't want to surface, they don't want to be known, they're afraid they're going to be deported," said Sclafani.
The judge should have all the paperwork read by Tuesday, November 24th. That's when there's going to be another hearing to determine whether Bleiweiss could be eligible for bond.
