FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Dorothy Whitehouse, 94, was being honored on her birthday by the Broward Sheriff's Office for her selfless devotion to others and to her community. She is proof that you can never be too old to get involved in your community.

She is a retired registered nurse, leaving the profession in her early eighties. Dorothy has volunteered with the blind, physically and mentally handicapped, with girls in juvenile detention centers and halfway houses and at the animal humane society.

Whitehouse volunteered for patrol in Deerfield Beach after a window was broken in her house in an act of vandalism. She worked for five years patrolling her neighborhood, working the front desk at the BSO district office and assisting with community functions. She's been with the program when Sheriff Lamberti worked in the Deerfield Beach district, becoming a volunteer at the age of 85.

"It's an honor to recognize Dorothy Whitehouse as she celebrates her 94th birthday," said Sheriff Lamberti. "She has spent years helping others and making our community a better place to live."
