Fla. Boaters End Up In Cuba After Rough Seas
OZELLO (CBS4) ―
You normally hear some outrageous stories of Cuban rafters risking their lives to seek liberty in Florida, but in this case a pair of Floridians ended up in Cuba because of rough waters. Now a family is waiting on word from the Cuban government to find out about their loved ones.
A Florida mother is awaiting word from Cuba after her son and his girlfriend accidentally ended up on the island while boating in rough waters.
Susan Vassallo says the U.S. Interests Section in Havana called her Christmas Day to report the two were in Cuban police custody.
The worried mother last spoke with her son on Saturday. Forty-year-old Robert Vassallo told his mother they were unharmed and being kept in a home outside the Havana jail where they were first taken.
Vassallo says the Interests Section said the girl did not have any identification.
A spokesman with the U.S. State Department would not comment on or confirm any details of the case.
