Everglades Wildfires Cut School Recess Short

WEST PARK (CBS4) ― The fire in the Everglades that has raged since last week has had an impact on children in Broward County.

Not only was recess canceled at all Broward County Public Schools, but the Boys & Girls Clubs in Broward also kept all children who attend after school activities indoors. Monday their playground was empty, and the pool that they use every school day was covered.

The wildfires burning in the Florida Everglades have consumed an area the size of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale combined, and because of the eastward winds pushing all the smoke to populated areas, the air quality has decreased dramatically. Those with respiratory problems such as asthma are at great risk.

Even though some might have been restless, many of the children interviewed were well aware that staying indoors was for their own good.

"I feel safe, because some people have asthma and we don't know what reactions they may have to the smoke," said Justin Clemmons.

Broward officials are monitoring the situation to determine whether to cancel outdoor activities for Tuesday as well.
