Good Bra/Bad Bra: Finding The Perfect Fit
AVENTURA (CBS4) ―
When it comes to women and fashion, comfort goes a long way, especially when it comes to bras. With a seemingly endless variety of styles, most women can relate to bad fitting bras. In fact, studies have shown that 85 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size but with help from an expert bra fitter,
CBS4's Lisa Petrillo found out it's not that hard to find comfortable and sexy support.
In Aventura Mall, there's a new boutique called "Intimacy", it's a new boutique that specializes in a one of a kind approach to bra fit and fashion. Susan Nethero, known nationally as "The Bra Whisperer", says finding the right fit has nothing to do with a tape measure, it's as individual as you are.
"We practice a holistic measure of fitting. It's different than a tape measure. A tape measure is a great tool for telling distance but it doesn't tell us about landscape," explained Nethero, founder of "Intimacy".
Unlike department stores that carry only a few sizes, Nethero carries European brands that range from "A" cups to "K" cups.
A woman in an ill-fitting bra often doesn't get enough support in the front, which causes spillage out of the cups and the sides and back straps ride up too high creating so-called 'back fat.'
But in a properly engineered bra, a woman is supported in the front and the band on the back and sides sit low and fitted.
"There's no back fat. It's level and low in the back. That's the ideal position, when it's in the right position a bra can eliminate back fat," said Nethero.
When fitted properly, Susan says, most women will go down a back size and up a cup size.
For instance, one customer who thought she was a 34C was actually a 32D with a properly fitted bra. Another customer was a 34C in a bad fitting bra but was in fact a 30D in a sexy demi bra.
Many bras don't offer support except for the shoulder straps which often dig in and cause shoulder pain. That can all change with a perfect fitting bra. Another customer went from a 38D to a refitted elegant 34G.
Susan say the small back size and larger cup size allows better support and no spillover on the side, plus it can make women look taller and thinner.
So whether you like your bras sweet and sexy or strong and sassy, you should feel confident and supported if you have the right fit.
Once you've found the perfect fitting bra, be sure to take care of. In order to double the lifetime of your bra, Susan suggests that you put in a lingerie bag, wash it in cold water in your machine and then hang to dry. Never put bras in the dryer.
