Broward County officials recorded elevated levels of ozone on Tuesday, meaning that people who are sensitive to the pollutant should avoid the outdoors to not suffer any health complications.
The Broward County Air Quality Program announced that ozone levels were "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" throughout the county, and for Wednesday predicted levels would be "Moderate". In a press release the program announced that during the summer months, there are periods of stable air which allows ozone to build up to elevated levels.
Young children, the elderly, persons with respiratory ailments, and individuals who exercise vigorously may be particularly sensitive to ozone's effects. Ozone irritates mucous membranes which can cause impaired respiratory functions, and symptoms may include sore throat, chest pain, coughing, and headaches.
This warning comes in light of another warning put in place in both Miami-Dade and Broward officials for people with respiratory problems because of smoke being blown from brush fires in Lake Okeechobee south into our area. So those who suffer from respiratory problems are facing a double threat outdoors.
