Summer Camp Gets Response After CBS4 Story Airs

Bright Globe Inc. Offers Performing Arts For Kids

DAVIE (CBS4) ― Bright Globe Inc. was a summer camp in need of campers. This 8-week camp in Davie offers dance, music, drama, art, reading and math classes. But they had a math problem to solve.

They have a $15,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. However, they cannot use the grant to discount the camp price for families unless they have 75 campers. As of Thursday, they had 32 open spots.
But after CBS4 News aired its story, 50 parents interested in sending their children to the camp had called by Friday. This helped Bright Globe fill its quota.

"If we lose that grant then all those kids, who really can't afford to be here anyway, who we've been trying to raise money for definitely won't be able to come to summer camp," said Dushaun Smith, Bright Globe Inc. founder.

Smith said if he couldn't use the grant the camp would either close or the price for parents will increase from $20 a week to $60 a week. He fears a price increase would force more parents to pull their kids from camp.

Bright Globe provides kids exposure to the arts, something Smith said many young people lack.

"A lot of kids who are in the program didn't have the opportunity to take these arts in their schools because it's so limited and it's so hard to get in the arts program in Broward County," Smith said. "A lot of kids want to learn how to dance, they want to learn to do music, they want to learn how to play the violin but they learn -- for males especially that playing the violin is a female thing."

It is a stereotype Smith has worked to destroy ever since he created the Bright Globe program five years ago when he was 16.

"A lot of times with music and art people express themselves through music and art," Smith said. "DaVinci expressed himself through his art. Beethoven expressed himself through his music. It gives people an outlet."

If you're interested in having your child participate in the Bright Globe Inc. summer camp, the camp lasts 8 weeks and starts next Monday. For more information on the camp contact Bright Globe Incorporated at 954 540-4535.
