County Transit Worker Jailed For Hacking Computers

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A Miami-Dade transit employee has been jailed, accused of hacking into the county's computer systems, in order to snoop on co-workers without their knowledge.

Miami-Dade police say Carlos Alberto Ortega is facing 53 counts of crimes against computer users, a third degree felony.

He was arrested after investigators discovered that he accessed county employee's e-mails without their knowledge.

Investigators say while Ortega worked as a Senior Operating Systems Programmer, he installed a software application on a computer that belonged to a Network Manager with the County Building and Zoning Department.

The software then allowed Ortega to unlawfully access e-mail communications from the manager's computer as well as other Miami-Dade County employees.

This is in violation of Florida state statutes governing computer crimes.

He was arrested at his home and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Detention Center.
