Church Plows County's Outdated Zoning Issue

KENDALL (CBS4) ― An old law that restricted the legitimacy of an "official" church by the amount of land it owned had been repealed by one pastor's fight against City Hall.

On Friday, Mayor Carlos Alvarez signed the repeal into law at the International Outreach Center in Kendall.

"It's been very difficult, it's been very challenging and that's why I want to be a part of it today, because it hasn't been easy," said Alvarez.

The local ordinance, passed in the 50's, wrote that in order for churches to legally operate they have to sit on at least two and a half acres of land and be a certain distance away from the street.

Pastor David Vega of the International Outreach Center in Kendall had filed a federal lawsuit against Miami-Dade County which accused the county of discriminating against churches and violating the constitution.

"It's almost like Miami is saying we're not church friendly. We'll say we allow the church but here are the conditions. They conditions are almost impossible to meet," Pastor David Vega told CBS4's Natalia Zea.

County commissioners voted in early December on repealing the law.
