MIAMI (CBS4) ―
For those of you trying to stay on a New Year's Diet, the Girl Scouts are about to make it more difficult because it's Girl Scout cookie time across South Florida.
The first truckloads of cookies arrived at South Florida distribution sites on Monday. The Girl Scouts of the USA have been selling cookies for nearly 80 years.
From Thin Mints to Samoas, all the favorites are back plus this year, there's a new cookie, Dulce de Leche, inspired by the confections of Latin America. These cookies have milk caramel chips and stripes.
There are eight varieties of cookies, all with zero trans-fat, and also a sugar free Chocolate Chip.
But will the crumbling economy take a bite out of cookie sales this year? That's a concern for many troopers preparing to go door to door. They're not just cookies they're a part of big business for the Scouts. Revenue from the sale makes up a large part of the yearly budget, so every cookie counts.
"This is what people and the Girl Scouts look forward to all year," Product Director Eva Birbrick told CBS4 Reporter Gwen Belton.
This year has a big goal: 40 thousand cases of cookies need to be sold. But the Girl Scouts are optimistic. Last year, they exceeded their goal.
Be prepared to shell out $3.50 a box wherever you see those cute, sweet Girl Scouts peddling cookies outside local supermarkets or at your front door. Unlike many things in the worsening economy, the price of a box of cookies hasn't changed in the past eight years.
In Miami-Dade, the annual Girl Scout cookie sale runs from January 15th to February 8th. In Broward County, the cookie sale runs from January 22nd to February 10th.
