Coppertone Girl Ad Is An Iconic Image Of Fun & Sun In Miami
It Hung In Miami For Nearly 50 Years
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The City of Miami's bathing beauty, the iconic Coppertone Girl and her bikini-tugging dog, has completed her well-deserved makeover and was unveiled at her new home Tuesday evening.
The 35-foot sign, given historic designation by Miami's preservation board in October, was hung on an office building in the city's new Miami Modern (MiMo) Biscayne Boulevard Historic District at 7300 Biscayne Boulevard. The official unveiling featured City, County and Coppertone officials as well as icon art aficionados.
Erected in Miami in 1959, the Coppertone sign's original home was Biscayne Boulevard at NE 6th Street. The slogan, "Tan, Don't Burn" greeted Miami visitors along Biscayne Blvd. for nearly 30 years. It was later moved to the Concord Building at 66th West Flagler Street, where it hung for another 15 years.
The famous sign, in the care of the Dade Heritage Trust, came down in May of 2008 for its Miami makeover. The faded and broken sign was taken to a Hialeah warehouse for restoration and refurbishment including LED lights to replace the iconic neon.
When the MiMo Historic District was created on Biscayne Boulevard from NE 50th to 77th streets to celebrate the areas unique Miami Modern architectural history, Dade Heritage Trust knew the area was the perfect place for the Coppertone girl.
Tuesday's unveiling event is one element of the MiMo Districts week of art events surrounding Art Basel Miami.
