Coral Springs Police Dog Dies In Hot Car

Police: "It appears to be an accident"

CORAL SPRINGS (CBS4) ― For the second time in two months, a Broward police dog has died. This time, a Coral Springs police dog died inside his handler's unmarked police car.

The police dog, named Hieke, was a narcotics detection dog who worked with an undercover officer, whose name has not been released.

The dog was discovered inside the sweltering hot car Wednesday afternoon in the City of Coral Springs. Investigators say the vehicle was not running and the dog succumbed to the heat. The officer was on-duty, working a case, when the dog died, according to police spokesman Sgt. Joe McHugh.

K-9 police cars are usually equipped with alarms that go off if the temperature inside gets too hot, but for some reason, the alarm in this vehicle didn't go off.

Heike's handler is said to be extremely upset and distraught over the dog's death.

Sgt. McHugh says the officer remains at work while criminal and internal affairs investigations are conducted.

Last month, a Broward sheriff's dog named Oozi was shot to death in Miami Beach during pursuit of a suspect.
