A Coral Springs police detective, whose police dog died after he accidentally left it in his unmarked police car, has been suspended for three days without pay, but no criminal charges will be filed against the detective.
The police dog, named Hieke, was a narcotics detection dog who died on August 27th, 2008 in the rear of the police vehicle. The vehicle was not running and the dog succumbed to the heat. According to the internal affairs investigation, the Detective did not properly care for his dog and as a result, will receive a 3-day suspension without pay.
The internal investigation also stated that it was apparent the dog died due to a tragic oversight on the part of the Detective. The State Attorney's Office also reviewed the case independently and concluded it was a tragic accident therefore, no criminal charges would be sought.
