A Coral Springs teen charged with murder in the stabbing death of his brother will stay in custody for now. During a hearing Tuesday, Broward Circuit Judge Robert Newman ordered that 15-year-old William Gorzynski remain at the Juvenile Assessment Center until his next hearing on November 4th.
Gorzynski is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 14-year-old brother Matthew. Before the hearing William was allowed to meet privately with his father and older brother Timothy. "We all broke down just now in the jury room talking to the young boy," explained his attorney Glenn Roderman.
"You're not talking to a hardened criminal." In court, Gorznyski's father Thomas and older brother Tim tried to comfort each other, but it was difficult. You could see Thomas mouth, "Poor baby! My poor baby."
Roderman explains this has been emotionally draining for everyone involved. "This is so much more emotional," he said. "You're dealing with two brothers, one of which killed the other brother, who've lived together their whole lives and were best friends."
Coral Springs police said Monday afternoon William and Matthew were at home arguing about a computer when one boy attacked the other.
"The two brothers were actually having a dispute over the sound of the speakers hooked up to the computer and the dispute escalated to where it became physical," said Coral Springs police Sgt. Joe McHugh.
It was then that William allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed his brother once in the chest. William quickly called 911 and reportedly told the emergency operator what had happened. Matthew was air lifted to Broward General Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
People who knew the brothers were stunned at the news.
"These kids, I've known them since they were little babies," said neighbor Ralph Vauria.
"They got into fights over some stuff cause their brothers and brothers fight a lot," said Austin Gosney, a friend. "Sometimes it might get a little violent, but not violent like this."
"He was great, he was my best friend, he was like a brother to me," said the teen's friend Kelli Steelman.
Grief counselors were on hand Tuesday at J. P. Taravella High School where the brothers went to school. Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook told CBS4 News he plans to ask the other city commissioners to join him at a town hall meeting where they will discuss ways to minimize teen violence.
William Gorzynski's attorney asked the judge for time to look over the case. The teen will be back in court next Wednesday. He's hoping he will be released to his family.
