Many people are looking for different ways to make money these days but some people are looking a bit more closely than others.
CBS4 Mobile Journalist Jim Robinson met a man who spends his spare time searching for treasure beneath the sandy shores of Fort Lauderdale beach.
Dan Wines is a home remodeler whose hobby is to spend time searching the sand of Fort Lauderdale beach for other people's treasures with his Christmas gift, a hand-held metal detector.
"I'd like to find a diamond ring, or some type of gold ring of that sort," Wines told
CBS4 Mobile Journalist Jim Robinson. But so far, that hasn't happened.
Mostly, Wines unearths quarters, dimes and pennies but while business is slow, he continues to dream.
"Finding a pirate treasure, or Spanish treasure, that would be great," said Wines.
Wines hopes his Christmas gift will eventually give back with the discovery of a lifetime like a Spanish doubloon but so far, it's been lots of useless junk, which he still picks up.
"I try to get rid of the garbage, you know, whatever will help," said Wines. He also doesn't mind finding small change because he says, "It all adds up eventually."
So, when many of us stress about the economic cloud above us, Wines' knows the sun will always shine, and people will always leave behind shimmers of hope for him to find.
