Woman, Child Shot Outside Dillard High School

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― An ongoing dispute being neighbors in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood turned violent Friday, sending a young girl and a woman to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Now police want to know exactly what happened.

11-year-old Shantus Williams and her aunt, Alison Dozier, were taken Broward General Medical Center. The aunt remained there Friday night, while Shantus was sent home, the victim of an adult crime.

Shantus' aunt, Ciara McGriff, says the long-running argument between neighbors ended with gunfire. "Today, we was in a dispute because my little sister goes to Dillard and they tried to come jump her."

The victim's family says there is bad blood in the neighborhood, which spilled into bloodshed Friday afternoon when a man opened fire.

"We was arguing and he started shooting," McGriff explained, "and I was right on the side of my sister, he just started shooting anywhere, didn't care where he was shooting."

Family members say the bullet hit Dozier in the leg and grazed Shantus. Broward Sheriff's deputies say it could have been a lot worse. "I think they were pretty fortunate. Guns aren't something to play with. This isn't a shootout at the O-K corral," said Mike Jachles.

Police aren't sure what led to the shooting, or the root cause of the dispute. The search is still on for the shooter, but police say they have a few leads and hope to make an arrest soon.
