Doctors Accused Of Pushing Illegal Prescriptions

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A South Florida doctor and pharmacist were arrested Thursday evening, accused of trafficking in prescription drugs.

The Broward Sheriff's detectives arrested Dr. Robert F. Hunt at his Ft. Lauderdale office, and Oakland Park pharmacist Michael Kenney. Deputies confiscated computers and medical files from both offices. Agents told CBS4 News they targeted these men because they wrote and filled prescriptions for drugs that were not medically necessary.

They say they are seeing an enormous increase in the amount of prescription drug fraud in South Florida.

"We have an extensive epidemic ongoing where pharmaceutical drugs of choice are hitting the streets primarily more than your street level drugs of cocaine heroin and marijuana," said Sgt. Lisa McElhaney.

Florida is one of a handful of states that does not have a prescription drug monitoring program to track patients who doctor shop for pharmaceutical drugs.
