A one-year old boy was rushed to Miami Children's Hospital Friday after being attacked by a family dog. According to Lillian Delgado, spokeswoman for the City of Homestead, the boy was attacked by an American Bull Dog and suffered severe head trauma.
The attack took place at the Aquarius Mobile Home Park, located along the 400 block of SW 8th Street in Homestead.
Delgado said the injured boy was first taken to Homestead Hospital but later transferred via Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Air Rescue helicopter to Miami Children's Hospital.
Neighbors were stunned by the mauling. "The poor kid. The head is...oh my god," said Maresol Madena.
Homestead Police Detective Fernando Morales underscored how pets can turn on a baby in a hurry.
"In any one of these cases where a dog has attacked a child, it's very serious and very unfortunate. Dogs have their animal instincts and sometimes when they are little babies they may see them as a threat, but we don't know why it attacked the baby though," Detective Morales said.
The owner of the dog immediately surrendered the animal to Miami-Dade Animal Services and it was humanely euthanized, according to Xiomara Mardcovich of Miami-Dade Animal Services.
The one-year-old suffered severe head trauma and is being incubated.
